BIOMAT project session

Dear Conference Participants!

During the ISSHAC-12 conference, a session will be dedicated to presenting the results achieved within the framework of the BIOMAT project. Below, we present the key information about the project.

Between December 1, 2024, and November 31, 2025, the Faculty of Chemistry at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) is implementing an international educational project titled “Improving teaching competencies in design of new generation biomaterials from wood waste” (BIOMAT). The project is funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme “Cooperation Partnerships in Higher Education (KA220-HED).” Project code: 2024-1-PL01-KA220-HED-000246133.

The project team includes Prof. dr hab. Beata Podkościelna and Dr. hab. Monika Wawrzkiewicz prof. UMCS (project leaders), as well as Dr. hab. Anna Wołowicz, Dr. Marta Goliszek-Chabros, Dr. Przemysław Podkościelny, and Dr. Łukasz Szajnecki.

The project, coordinated by Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, aims to develop knowledge and research in waste management in the pulp and paper industry and the production of innovative biomaterials for environmental applications. By promoting pro-environmental ideas, the project also seeks to strengthen cooperation between partner institutions from Poland, Sweden, and Macedonia.

In light of increasing environmental concerns and declining fossil resource reserves, the use of biopolymers from renewable sources is a promising alternative. Lignocellulosic biomass contains one of the most abundant renewable forms of carbon and is therefore considered an eco-friendly raw material to replace traditional fossil resources. Biopolymers derived from lignocellulosic biomass, crops, or wood are now viewed as a key feedstock for developing biodegradable and renewable materials.

As part of the project, innovative educational materials will be developed, summarizing the knowledge of academic partners on the use of biomaterials obtained from lignocellulosic biomass waste. The project partners will present specific solutions that will serve to develop a joint strategy for managing biocomponent-containing waste and utilizing biomass waste to produce new materials with wide economic applications.

The project will result in modern educational resources, such as videos, e-scripts, online tests, and multimedia presentations in English and the native languages of the project partners. All activities will be aimed at stimulating virtual forms of collaboration and communication as effective educational tools in higher education and at overcoming barriers to international mobility in face-to-face interactions.

The project is directed not only at students of natural science disciplines but will also include materials dedicated to high school students. The participation of specialists from Europe with established scientific reputations in the field of lignocellulosic biomass will ensure that the educational materials incorporate the latest knowledge and expert experience.

The project consortium includes, apart from the Faculty of Chemistry at UMCS, the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (Sweden) and the University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje (Macedonia). The project coordinator at the Royal Institute of Technology is Dr. Olena Sevastyanova, and at the University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, Prof. Jadranka Blazhevska-Gilev.

We inspire you to follow updates about the project on the official website: https://www.umcs.pl/en/biomaterasmus.htm

We invite you to participate in the special session devoted to biomaterials, particularly lignin and its applications. There is no extra fee for the participation in one or two special sessions as the participation is included by the general registration to the ISSHAC Symposium. When registering, please mark the option that you want to attend one or two special sessions. There is still a limit of two abstracts per registered participant, i.e. when registering for the conference, you can submit one abstract to each special session for the same registration fee, or submit one abstract for general ISSHAC conference and one abstract for one of the special sessions. Of course you can participate freely in both sessions even without sending an abstract.
